How to Prepare for Acupuncture for Back Pain
If you have never gotten acupuncture before, you probably have a lot of questions about what to expect from the treatment. At Breen Chiropractic Clinic, we may recommend that you undergo acupuncture if you have chronic or acute back pain that is preventing you from living a happy, healthy life. Acupuncture is a safe, minimally invasive alternative to prescription painkillers, and can offer lasting relief from back pain and other symptoms. Here is a guide to preparing for acupuncture in 20110 Manassas, VA.
Eat a Light Meal and Hydrate
Eating a light snack or meal before your acupuncture treatment will help you relax and avoid a blood sugar crash or fatigue. You should also hydrate by drinking water, tea, or sports drinks. Try to avoid caffeine and highly sugary drinks, and don’t drink alcohol before acupuncture.
Wear Comfortable Clothing
We will need to access your back and other parts of the body to provide acupuncture for back pain. You should wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing that isn’t tight around your wrists or ankles. Dr. Breen may have you change into a hospital gown depending on the extent of your treatment.
Take Care With Medication
Taking blood thinning medication before acupuncture may increase your risk of bleeding or bruising; however, you should consult with your doctor and follow their advice about what medications you can take before acupuncture. We do recommend that you avoid stimulants and depressants and try not to take any pain medication for at least four hours before your appointment.
Write Down Your Questions
If you have questions about your procedure, including what to expect and how acupuncture will help your back pain, you should write your questions down. We want you to have all of the information you need about acupuncture for back pain, and Dr. Breen is happy to answer any of your questions before the treatment begins.
Arrange for a Ride Home
Most people don’t experience any negative side effects after undergoing acupuncture for back pain. There is no recovery period, and you can typically return to your regular routine right after your treatment. You should experience pain relief and feel very relaxed. Some people even fall asleep during treatment. If you feel fatigued after your appointment, you should arrange to have someone drive you home.
